Rep. Tauscher leaving House for State Dept.
Congressional sources have confirmed that Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.) is going to be tapped for a top State Department post under Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Tauscher, the current chairwoman of the centrist New Democrat Coalition and chairwoman of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee, is set to become the undersecretary for Arms Control and Nonproliferation.
Tauscher was a Clinton superdelegate during the Democratic presidential primary and is a close ally of the former New York senator.
But Tauscher is also a key ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Earlier this month, Tauscher was instrumental in saving a mortgage reform bill - a top Democratic priority - from obliteration from the more conservative wing of the Democratic Caucus.
